Hiring guide
Before you sign with a company
The best businesses welcome these questions. If a company dodges them, keep looking.
- Check the license. Where your state requires one for this work, look it up on the state’s licensing site before anyone visits, not after.
- Get written quotes for the same scope. Ask each company to price the same job, materials and equipment so you’re comparing like with like.
- Ask who handles permits. If the job needs one, the company should pull it and tell you how long it usually takes.
- Read the payment schedule. Payments should follow progress, with a modest deposit up front.
- Get the warranty in writing. Know what’s covered, for how long, and whether it transfers if you sell.
