Hiring guide

Before you sign with a company

The best businesses welcome these questions. If a company dodges them, keep looking.

  1. Check the license. Where your state requires one for this work, look it up on the state’s licensing site before anyone visits, not after.
  2. Get written quotes for the same scope. Ask each company to price the same job, materials and equipment so you’re comparing like with like.
  3. Ask who handles permits. If the job needs one, the company should pull it and tell you how long it usually takes.
  4. Read the payment schedule. Payments should follow progress, with a modest deposit up front.
  5. Get the warranty in writing. Know what’s covered, for how long, and whether it transfers if you sell.
