Hiring guide ## Before you sign with anyone on this list The best businesses welcome these questions. If a company dodges them, keep looking. 1. **Check the license.** Where your state requires one for this work, look it up on the state’s licensing site before anyone visits, not after. 2. **Get written quotes for the same scope.** Ask each company to price the same job, materials and equipment so you’re comparing like with like. Our [Des Moines cost guide](https://readthelocallist.com/guides/hvac-contractors-cost-des-moines/) shows what drives the price. 3. **Ask who handles permits.** If the job needs one, the company should pull it and tell you how long it usually takes. 4. **Read the payment schedule.** Payments should follow progress, with a modest deposit up front. 5. **Get the warranty in writing.** Know what’s covered, for how long, and whether it transfers if you sell.
